Probiotics in Food

Manufacturers are adding probiotics to many foods.

Increasingly, manufacturers are adding "probiotics, or 'friendly' bacteria similar to those found in the human digestive system" to foods such as

"yogurts,

smoothies,

snack bars and

cereals, even

baby formula, and

chocolate."

Some manufacturers claim that probiotics "'regulat[e] your digestive health' or 'strengthen your body's defenses.'" According to health experts, "probiotics are generally safe, and in some cases, might be helpful." But additional "research is needed." The AP noted that this is "a hot new area, reflecting a growing understanding of the role that naturally occurring intestinal bacteria play in health."

In fact, "the National Institutes of Health is hosting a conference where top scientists will discuss recent advances."
